So the kookabubbas have been very vocal as usual. Now, full disclosure, I broke one of my rules but hey, rules were meant to be broken and there were extenuating circumstances and..and...and 😂 Anyway. The weather has been warm and humid here, as my many posts complaining have made you aware no doubt. The animal life around here hasn't seemed to have been affected much though. Or that's how it seemed. We pulled up yesterday and there was a Kookaburra looking very hot and bothered after repeatedly going to the ground to get food for the newly fledged kookabubbas and being mostly unsuccessful.
It flew up and onto the telephone wire (I think it's the telephone wire at least, and it's fitting with the 'laugh, kookaburra laugh' song so let's just say that's what it is, ok?). It sat there with its beak open and wings held away from the body trying to combat the heat. We refilled the water dishes and left the tap running to entice it to come in and cool down but no joy. Now a bit of context: we had just come in from buying mince so I could make the dogs some delicious food (you already know where this story is headed I'm sure...) but I have to admit it, I looked at the bird, I looked at Matt and back at the bird and blurted out "get some mince".
I tend not to feed wild animals. But I get that people do and that they get a lot of joy out of it. I also should point out that mince is not a complete diet for birds and it lacks the calcium content that they require for strong and healthy bones but we've lived here 10 years and this is the first time and yada, yada, yada. Needless to say after husby threw a small ball of mince onto the front yard ALL the kookaburras assembled! It was pretty brilliant actually, getting to see them so nice and close and watching as they (very) occasionally took some up to feed the two young ones. They returned this morning, all up out the front laughing pointedly at us. I looked at Matt and looked outside and looked back at Matt as he said: "glad we don't have any mince left" 😂
