"text": "Want to see into a secret world? Keep watching...\n\nSome experiences are really difficult to put into words. So I won't faff about too much with this one. (Oh, alright, you know me, maybe a few words for these lovelies...)\n\nWe only noticed a tawny on the nest across the road, late into the piece. Suddenly it was there, on the haphazard nest of bits and bobs they are want to 'build' ie slap together and it had two fluffy chicks with it. We watched closely for two days. And then suddenly there was only one chick. \n\nThey were looking like they had hatched a couple of weeks earlier so we were thinking it had maybe fledged but thought if so it would be nearby, with the other parent usually stuck to its side. I searched and searched, clambering around peering into trees and under bushes in case it had topped from its rickety perch. I spotted Mum but no second chick. \n\nWe had also been hearing the local Powerful Owl and I was worried that perhaps the P'Owl did what P'Owls do ie eat the cute things and the next day we anxiously went outside to find...an empty nest. No parents. No chicks. Bugger. \n\nNow I'm a persistent thing and so every day I peered into the forest just in case and very recently I saw FIVE sets of eyes peering back at me!!! The two parents, two chicks and...a third tawny!\n\nSo I've been spending time with them, watching the chicks snatching at cicadas and bobbing their heads around and snoozing in the sun. It's been really lovely. But a couple of days ago I watched in sheer amazement as one of the adults took flight, heading straight to the leaf littered forest floor. I thought it might be getting a drink from the creek but one by one ALL the tawnies flew down to join it. \n\nThe sun was shining down so the ground was glowing and you could feel the warmth just looking at it. And there they were, flying around in broad daylight, orange eyes looking around at each other, the chicks snatching at leaves and then they started throwing their wings open and belly flopping on the ground - sunbathing!!! One of the adults even wandered over to a moss covered boulder and laid down, really wriggling out against the warm rock. \n\nWhat a special privilege! They knew I was watching and yet they exposed themselves in the most vulnerable way imaginable. To earn the trust of wild animals, without food, without favour, but just by quietly observing has to be one of the most magical things you can experience. \n\nI couldn't find the tawnies yesterday or today and I suspect that the chicks are spending more time away from Mum and Dad. I reckon the adults will back in our backyard soon enough, watching over our quiet little life, as we watch over theirs.\n\nTawny Frogmouth family sunbathing\nNorthern Illawarra \n\n#tawnyfrogmouth #tawnies #sunbathingbirds #australianbirds #nocturnalanimals #australia #backyardzoology #ausgeo #bbcwildlife #natgeo",
