Now, I learn from my lessons and so I keep the tight jeans for when I'm trying to hold all my fat in the one place and wear loose pants to bend over in. So I was feeling suitably dressed for getting in nice and close to a hermit crab I found today...ahhh...that ol' misplaced confidence! \n\nJust as I leant over my hips decided to not work. As in completely not work. One leg went forward and my other leg collapsed at the knee which proceeded to continue its movement backwards along the jagged rocks. At this point I was just concerned with protecting first, my beautiful camera and second, my beautiful face ๐Ÿ˜‚ so I threw a hand forward to try and break my fall. That hand plunged into a garden (?) of anemones. Can confirm much squishiness ensued. I actually panicked at this point because I could NOT leverage myself up. No matter what I did my hips would not support my attempts at getting back on my feet - bastards! There were people on the headland and I pray they didn't see me - I can only imagine how I looked trying to rock myself into any position that would allow me to stand, clutching at my camera, eyes never leaving the hermit crab who continued to happily pluck tasty morsels out of the water for its dinner.\n\nSpoiler alert: I did eventually make it to my feet - hooray - with a banged up and scratched knee, a very bruised ego and concerns about future bending over activities (Matt, mind out of the gutter please!). \n\nHappy to report after all that I got to watch not one but two hermit crabs feeding away and watch as one tumbled slightly and had to pull itself right side up again. That was awesome because I actually got to see and photograph bits of the hermit crab that are quite hard to see while they are foraging around in the water. They are actually quite different from other species of crab in that their abdomen is soft and long and curled and has a hook like structure on each side of the tip of the abdomen called uropods that hold onto the spiral inside the shell. I didn't get to see all of that of course because with that soft body they are totally vulnerable when out of their shell so only leave it when they are moving into another, bigger one. Plus they kind of look like the face huggers from Alien and no-one wants to see that when they are stuck in a crude version of the splits, on the rocks, face hovering over the water.\n\nHermit
