Backyard Zoology ยท 26 August 2024 2024-08-26T17:57:21+10:00 https://www.facebook.com/backyardzoology/videos/786189393438714/ Today was one of those days where nothing really happened while everything actually did. The whales are starting to head south and we are probably a month off peak season. I knew there was a chance that I'd see nothing today but thanks to the power of steroids I decided I'd risk it anyway. The was a cow and a calf pretty much as soon as I got there which was fabulous of course. But they were lazy in that way that as photographers you can forget is also part of their behaviour. There was no breaching, no pec slaps or tail throws, just quiet resting, a slight swim south and then back up north, just a bit. Everything was gentle and slow and absolutely perfect. A huge pod of dolphins swam past and again, aside from a couple of leaps, they too were quiet, literally rolling along with the ocean. I had to stop myself from doing that thing I do, where I chant quietly to myself, trying desperately to manifest some huge action. Today I wanted to just sit (okay, if you've read my previous post about my issue with sitting, I don't mean it literally) in the moment. To let the beauty of the place and the animals wash over me and I'm so thankful I did. What a perfect day. #humpbackhighway #humpbackwhaleseason #dolphins #humpbackwhale #commondolphin #shellharbour #basspoint #backyardzoology
