I had been hoping to post something for Valentine's Day because I do love a good festival but instead I spent my afternoon sweltering away as it's been stupidly hot and humid here, waiting for a delivery of roses from my lovely husband. The roses ended up in a suburb about 30 minutes away, delivered to a woman I've never met before!!! I did end up getting the roses in the end, but the stupidly hot weather remains. You win some, you lose some I guess! Seemed fitting then, that after the day for lovers, I woke up to the call and reply of the male and female Eastern Whipbird. The sound you hear is actually two birds - the male making that iconic 'whip crack' sound with the female replying with the 'choo choo' straight after. I went outside to investigate and the yard was teeming with these birds and by teeming I mean I sighted about 2 separate pairs but as these birds are often seen and not heard and these ones were bouncing around happily and occasionally coming out into the open, I reckon a touch of exaggeration is ok in this case. These birds are apparently monogamous so I can only assume that the male does not leave his shoes lying around the lounge room 😳😂 Eastern Whipbird Northern Illawarra #northernillawarra #coalcoast #birdsofoz #australianbirdlife #bushbirds #backyardzoology
