These Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos have been visiting various trees around the street recently. Matt called me out from my lair the other afternoon (the laundry slash study slash crochet haven) and I was super happy to find one of these birds tearing my neighbour's tree to shreds. The neighbour? She probably wasn't so happy! But he was searching for the larvae of wood borers which they can hear from deep within the branch which is absolutely wild to me. I mean, I can hear a packet of chips being opened from several rooms away so maybe these are my spirit animals after all. He peeled whole strips of bark away until he finally found a nice plump grub which he promptly munched down. They're still one of my favourite birds ever. YTBC Northern Illawarra
