I know this is Backyard Zoology and not Backyard Mycology but I thought you guys wouldn't mind a change in pace for one post.
These are the Ghost Mushrooms that I found growing in our yard after being alerted to a pair of Tawny Frogmouths snoozing in the corner, by a noisy couple of Lewin's Honeyeaters who wouldn't leave them alone and had me jumping over a fence, albeit a little one, to check on the Tawnies and as a result spotted these super special fungi. (Shout out to those annoyed when I write in super long sentences 😉). So a big thank you to bird bullies I guess.
I've wanted to see these mushies forever. To the naked eye, they emit this kind of soft whiteish light but it's once you do the long exposure with a camera that you can see the bright fluorescent green glow. Either way, it's incredible.
So far we've spent 3 nights with them as I swear into the darkness trying to learn a brand new style of photography for me. The Tawnies have flown in and perched over the top of us, gently calling, wondering no doubt why the need for the language before heading out into the night. Possums have rained poo on us from on high. Jungle Huntsman have taken years off Matt's life.
And it was all worth it. Totally.
