Well, this little guy made my entire week and it's only Wednesday! Actually, I spotted him (her?) by chance yesterday from out the bathroom window, a little flash of movement just out from my little side garden and of course, ran out, on tippy toes, like the delicate fairy that I am and promptly made such a noise that the baby dragon was nowhere to be seen. Today, I noticed another quick flash on the way to my bin (it's ALWAYS on the way to the bin!) - the dragon running from its sun baking spot and up and back into the garden. Look, I'm the world's worst gardener. I may as well throw money directly into a pot or into the ground, cut out the middleman I say (I'm the middleman by the way. A very useless middleman)but for some reason, this little patch is going great guns. It's nice and wild looking too, lots of flowers on heavily drooping branches, some carefully placed rocks and chunky branches that have dropped from on high. And the husband's coffee grains 😂🙄 but there's lots of nooks and crannies and bees and mantids and spiders and wasps and lizards so I must be doing something right! And now two sightings of this baby Eastern Water Dragon over two days. Looks like I have a new resident!!! I was lucky to get to spend a few minutes with what looks like a fairly newly hatched lizard - the female digs her nest in the side of a riverbank, laying her eggs and then moving on with her life and depending on the heat, the eggs take up to 3 months to hatch. Once hatched they are completely on their own and somehow this tiny one (I've put up a photo with a gum leaf in it to give you an idea just how small this little one is) ended up at our house. And as my son is turning 18 in a few months, I can now direct all my mummy anxiety onto this new baby. Engaging 24/7 stress and motherly devotion in 3, 2, 1...😂 Baby Eastern Water Dragon Northern Illawarra
