This morning we were woken up by ridiculously loud thunder. You know the type that's a flash and a bang all at once and rattles the windows and makes you clench up instinctively because that will totally save you when you're inevitably struck by lightening? And after a dry day we've just had another storm and it is raining and raining and raining!!! I can only imagine what's happening to the creek across the road, the same creek that has consisted of only a couple of sad looking puddles for a while now. Fingers crossed for froggy sounds tonight!\n\nBut back to yesterday. I finally pulled the boots on after what feels like forever and headed into the Wollongong Botanic Gardens. As I walked through the gates I noticed a small flock of a birds that I couldn't quite recognise fly overhead and back out of the gardens. I tumbled the image through my brain for a while but could not for the life of me, put my finger on it. So, like most things, the image fell out of my mind and was replaced with thoughts of baking, and photography and questions such as why some dogs have human names and other don't. You know, the big things. Anyway, about an hour later and I saw that same flock head back in and into a fruiting tree - Topknot Pigeons - about 6 or 7 of them!!! \n\nI have only seen these guys once, when I had a pair in my palm tree nicking the berries and they are the most hilarious looking things with their over the top mohawk and if I love anything, it's a hilarious looking bird! After a quick lens change, I snapped a couple of quick photos and then the flighty buggers took to the sky again and headed to the other end of gardens. Now I didn't want to miss out on getting some decent photos so I did what any unfit 45 year old woman would do and put my head down and started to run. After birds. Who fly. In the sky. At speed. And as I was running I realised that I wasn't sure if I had zipped shut the side of my camera bag that was housing my favourite lens. Or if I had zipped up the other side that was holding my new spare battery after dropping my other one into a rock pool. \n\nSo I did the only sensible thing I could think of, I kept running. But I pushed my arms out straight behind me, clamping them to the sides of my backpack as best I could in a position I would refer to as the 'reverse Superman'. Now you have to understand that by this time the Pigeons were long gone. There was no context for my frantic running. People stared. I'm not entirely sure, but I think I clocked someone pushing their child protectively behind them. I'm only thankful that I didn't have the breath to yell out the words, \"Bird! Bird!\" that were running repeatedly through my head. \n\nAnd of course I didn't make it. I not only didn't catch up to those birds, but didn't catch sight of them again. And in a perfectly ironic move, they caused me to become the hilarious bird.
