If I had to narrow down THE sound that represents home to me, it would be the various calls of the Eastern Yellow Robin. Most often it is the first bird I hear in the morning and the last at night, generally beating the Kookaburras and the Cockatoos. In a way, their call has this sombreness to it, but I think that's more because I hear them calling when it's dark or from deep within the forest where it is damp and shadowy and strange. But I also see these lovelies hanging off the edge of tree trunks or the substitute tree trunks, the old, splintering wooden power poles. They sit precariously, looking for insects and spiders, often on the ground or sometimes on the trees themselves where they pounce down and eat up their prey. Small birds that are so lovely and bright with that splash of yellow against the green of the surrounding foliage and the yellowing, fallen leaves. Eastern Yellow Robin Northern Illawarra
