Very happy to have FINALLY got back out amongst it again this afternoon after doing absolutely nothing nature based for days. If you could see our front yard at the moment, you wouldn't see a lot of yard, just a whole lot of Colorbond and loads and loads of ceiling batts. It's new roof and re-wiring the house time! Which is totally exciting but I have no capacity to organise tradies and think about anything else. Tradies are hard work. Don't get me wrong, I love tradies. I mean, some of my best friends are tradies... actually that's not true and if it was I wouldn't be looking down the barrel of a massive reno bill but I do love tradie language.
Personally, I genuinely like being called darlin' (I'm not even being sarcastic). And when trying to decide on which colours to go with for the roof, I had one guy say to me, "Darlin', trust me, I have these colours for my roof and it looks magic." Magic! I haven't heard that word used in a non magician sense in, I think, forever so that kind of made my day. But you know what? I really don't like that most tradie of habits, the old, "Love, can I use your toilet?" For the love of everything that is holy, I can not express more strongly my belief that poos are for your own home toilet, not anyone else's 😂. Yes, this might one day destroy my bowels, but you can rest assured, this belief system makes me an awesome dinner guest! But tradies, tradies don't think like that. And for a germaphobe like myself, one who incidentally is about to start an immunotherapy that shuts down part of the immune system, I'm kind of feeling on high alert. Because you know what contains a lot of germs? Poo! So fingers crossed that this upcoming week brings with it correctly toilet trained tradies (ie off to Maccas they go!)
But having the house wall to wall with strapping young men (I hope!) means I won't be able to get out at all. I'm planning to potter around the backyard with the dogs and try and do some planting and work on the dustbowl that they have created and probably catch up on some reading. But this afternoon was the first time in ages to get out with the husband and do some good old fashioned birding and good lord I really have missed it!!! As you all know I've been addicted to getting those little time lapse videos which I love the end result of but are totally boring to make so it was a total breath of fresh air wandering around as the sun was going down chasing after glimpses of colourful feathers and various calls.
And this boy made the venture out all worthwhile! I love the ratty look non dominant male Superb Fairy-Wrens get as they lose their winter brown feathers and start to acquire their totally vibrant, sexy AF blue and black breeding outfit. I've got a heap of terrible photos of this bird because when I first saw it, I was so desperate to get at least one photo of it that I was just snapping away. Bird covered by fence. Snap. Bird obscured by rock. Snap. Spot where bird had once been. Snap. Snap. Snap.
I lost the husband chasing this little dude, who was bouncing around in the shrubbery and on the cycleway catching bugs for dinner. Totally not shy, only heading for the hills if a passing cyclist got too close and better still, he even eventually posed for me in good light a couple of times! So I'm going to take that as a sign that my week is going to be filled with handsome, well mannered males. Fingers crossed!
Superb Fairy-Wren
